What is Horizen?

Horizen is a modular platform focused on privacy technology, initially launched in 2017 without an ICO. The project is currently evolving with the introduction of Horizen 2.0, a Layer 3 appchain deployed on Base, which leverages Ethereum's security features. This iteration emphasizes application-level security and decentralization of privacy layers, moving away from the earlier hybrid model of Proof of Work and Proof of Stake.

The native token, ZEN, plays a key role in the ecosystem, facilitating DAO governance, accessing privacy services, and supporting zkApp interactions. With the migration to Base, ZEN has transitioned to an ERC-20 token, enhancing interoperability within the Ethereum ecosystem. The governance model is community-driven via the Horizen DAO, allowing for transparent decision-making.
