What is MonaCoin?

MonaCoin is an open-source digital currency and peer-to-peer payment network, recognized as the first cryptocurrency from Japan. It was created in December 2013 and officially launched on January 1, 2014, with no initial coin offering or premine. The coin serves as decentralized electronic cash primarily intended for Japanese users and operates on a hard fork of Litecoin. Technical implementations include a soft fork at block 937440 to add Segregated Witness and the adoption of the Lightning Network.

The mining process utilizes the Lyra2REv2 and Dark Gravity Wave v3 algorithms, providing equitable opportunities for miners. The project was initiated by the pseudonymous developer Mr. Wantanabe, and the broader team remains anonymous. While MonaCoin has established a user base in Japan, it has not aimed for international expansion. Despite the lack of a publicly available roadmap, the development team has maintained updates and improvements in response to evolving mining technologies and user needs.
